What Pro-test for Science is all about...

Following in the footsteps of the Pro-Test group in Oxford, UK,
students and scientists at UCLA have pledged to stand up
against the lies and misinformation of animal rights groups,
and the violence of extremist organizations. They have
formed the group Pro-Test for Science (formerly UCLA
Pro-Test), which stands for science, reasoned discourse and
the belief that life-saving medical research must continue
without violence and harassment from misguided activists.

The group was founded by Professor J. David Jentsch, and
he has been joined by a number of other scientists who have
also been the victims of animal rights extremism in
California. With the support of
Americans for Medical
Progress, Speaking of Research and Pro-Test UK, we aim to
challenge this climate of fear that has descended upon
researchers in California and beyond!

If you support our mission to promote humane biomedical
research and to combat animal rights extremism, consider
raising your voice by signing the Pro-Test petition.
Our Mission...

We are an organization composed of scientists, researchers, academics, students and members of the general public.

Our central mission is to:

Encourage scientists and non-scientists to stand up and support the critical role that humane and well-regulated animal research
plays in medical advances of the past, present and future.

Dispel myths and falsehoods propagated by animal rights groups regarding the true nature of animals research.

Provide an academic forum in which civilized discussion surrounding the animal research issue can take place.

Combat fear and support victims of violence, harassment and threats used to coerce researchers and institutions carrying out
medical research with animals.

UPDATE: Recent
Pro-Research Gathering
Underscores Support for
Biomedical Research

On October 24, 2009 at 5 PM, members of the UCLA and Los
Angeles came together on the UCLA campus to show their
resolute support for biomedical research, including that which
involves animal subjects. Within 10 minutes of the onset of the
event, more than 120 scientists, veterinarians, members of the
general public and their family, friends and pets, began standing
peacefully on the northwest corner of Westwood and LeConte
Blvds in Westwood. Nearby, the animal rights activist and
extremist group slowly grew to approximately 40 individuals.

While scientists held up signs endorsing the value of research
and condemning extremist acts, passed out informational
materials and engaged the general public and media who came
with questions about research, individuals on the other side
shouted slogans, taunted pro-research attendees and threw  in
an insult or two directed at local restaurants that serve meat. In
doing so, they firmly positioned themselves against the vast
majority the general public who support medical research and
the use of animals for food production.

What conversations were had between the two sides indicated
that those activists who participated in this so-called vigil were
nearly universally unwilling to condemn criminal actions
(arsons, attempted murder and property damage) perpetrated
by animals rights extremists and - instead - generally seemed to
support it as a viable alternative to dialogue. Pro-test for Science
once again reminds those interested in the cause of animal
rights that discourse, transparency and openness is possible
only once the violence comes to an end, once and for all.
